THE ETHOS

"Hi."
"Hey. How are you?"
"Fine - you?"
"Fine."

Have you ever thought that there could be more to your conversational life? Are you perhaps getting tired of talking about the same things with the same people day in, day out? Do you ever wish you could do something a little more...spontaneous?

If your answer to the above questions was yes, then we have a solution for you. The Oxford Muse Society facilitates what we call Conversation Dinners: in short, we bring together strangers from all walks of life who would never meet under normal circumstances in order to explore each other's diverse thoughts and experiences in a pleasant, and hopefully new, setting, using venues which are remarkable either due to their devotion to organically and locally sourced products, or else due to their unique architectural, cultural, and epicurean qualities.

HOW IT WORKS:

As diners arrive we pair them with someone they have never met and supply them with our Menu of Conversation, which gives them an array of stimulating questions to choose from in order to spark off what often proves to be an illuminating and sometimes even difficult line of thought for both conversationalists. The experience gives the diner a chance to get to know a stranger well, but, hopefully, also a chance to find out more about themselves.

WHO WE ARE:

The Oxford Muse is a non-profit organisation started by historian and conversationalist Theodore Zeldin for the promotion of less superficial daily interchanges and to stimulate courage and invention in personal, professional, and cultural life. The Oxford Muse Society is the student chapter of that organisation, consisting individuals who were drawn to the Muse originally by participation in Conversation Dinners. We were so refreshed and invigorated by our experiences that we immediately became enthusiastic to organise and promote the events ourselves. Though we are all currently students at Oxford University, the events themselves are not limited simply to the student body but have always Oxford Muse Society Committee.
